CHAPTER 11

MIN AND ANXIOUS were fast asleep in the chair when I returned, feeling fresh and optimistic, like the world had been reborn, me along with it. Amazing what a cold shower in a public facility can do for a guy after he's spent far too long in a hot, humid bus with two dead comedians!

Min's arms were wrapped tight around Anxious, stealing the dampness from his cool vest. He was curled up tight, soaking her shorty shorts, but she clearly didn't mind.

Smiling, I ran my hand along Vee's paintwork, feeling blessed. I reminded myself that the grey waste in the container under the sink would need emptying, and would do it when I left tomorrow, but apart from that there was nothing to do but hang my towel up, stash my soap and shampoo, and take Min to see the horses.

Vee's windows and doors were open so it wasn't like an oven inside, but I stopped short before entering as there was something wrapped up and waiting for me on the little step I used to make access easier.

Brown paper and torn tabs of tape reflected the sun on what seemed to be a mundane item, but it gave me pause. I pegged out my towel first, left my wash bag beside the step, and retrieved the parcel. Sitting on the floor, I hefted the item, a little longer than my hand, but weighty, with a bulbous end. I knew immediately what it was, but unwrapped it nevertheless.

The pestle that matched the mortar. Why was I being given a pestle and mortar? Especially when the heavier half was thrown through my window? The dull grey stone was innocuous enough, but a piece of paper was taped to the shaft so I peeled it away and read the message.

"You were lucky you weren't here. Sleep well," I read quietly, to make sure the words hit home.

I glanced at Min and Anxious and my heart skipped a beat. Grabbing the side of the campervan, I let the dizziness pass, but panic rose like it never had before, and I had to lie back for fear of collapsing. Someone had been here, watched them sleep, then left the pestle right beside them. Anything could have happened, and I wasn't there to protect them.

The panic attack eased off and I began to think clearly, but was in two minds whether I should even tell Min. She'd worry, and I knew her focus would be on me, not herself. Should I keep this from her? No, I couldn't. We'd promised there would be no more secrets, that we'd be honest and open with each other. Keeping silent was a betrayal of that trust.

I had no choice but to tell her.

Min stirred, then opened her eyes sleepily and yawned. Frowning, she glanced down at Anxious, then laughed with relief. "I thought I'd wet myself! I'm soaked through."

"At least you stayed nice and cool."

"Yes, but now I need to change. Come on, Anxious, time to wake up, mister sleepyhead.
